The Needles

The Needles, plein air painting on The Isle of Wight

I recently took some holiday time to go to the Isle of Wight with my girlfriend and of course I took my painting gear along.
After the ferry dropped us off from Portsmouth we drove directly to the iconic set of sea stacks on the westernmost point of the island called The Needles.

Set up with Alum Bay in the background

While the weather was mostly overcast there were small windows during the painting process when the sun came peaking out for a cameo. I tried to capture these fleeting moments in the painting as the light left some warm details on some of the rock formations.

Which brush, the long flat or the filbert?

This isn’t the first time I’ve painted The Needles, incidentally. In one of my early classes with Andrew Schofield he taught me several techniques with which to approach such a seascape. I’ve probably ignored or forgotten half of them in this painting. I’m very pleased to now paint The Needles from life for a challenging yet very enjoyable spot of plein air painting.

I used Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd paints for this study in the following colours:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Cadmium Red Medium
Magenta
Cerulean Blue Hue
French Ultramarine
Burnt Sienna

No extra medium used.

‘Glasshouse at The Grove’ Time-Lapse Video

2020
Oil on canvas
12″ x 10″

This is a short time-lapse video where I paint the main restaurant at the luxury hotel, spa & golf resort located in Chandler’s Cross.

I have had the pleasure of working at The Grove for several years and I’ve always enjoyed the buzz from The Glasshouse restaurant and bar, especially since the multi-million-pound refurbishment last year. There is also the excitement of working with high-profile clients and events on any given day such as the hugely successful NATO Summit 2019.
Big shout out to Gabriel the Concierge Manager and the boys on concierge team, as well as the rest of the hotel staff who have made it so pleasant to work there.
Also had help on the video and painting from the lovely Briony.
