The world can seem like a crazy place at the moment so I try and calm myself and others by painting things that showcase positivity and optimism.
For the past few years I’ve mainly worked with oil paint, although I do like to frustrate myself with watercolour from time to time. At the moment I’m fascinated with exploring the relationship between warm and cool colours.

High quality brushed are king. Rosemary & Co have never let me down. My most used brush is a long handle ivory long flat size 3. For smaller paintings it can be the only brush I use.

My current paints include:

Old Holland
Titanium White

Winsor & Newton Griffin Alkyd
Winsor Lemon
Winsor Yellow
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Red Medium
Permanent Rose
Permanent Alizarin Crimson
Magenta
Phthalo Blue
Cobalt Blue Hue
French Ultramarine
Phthalo Green
Burnt Sienna
Raw Umber
Paynes Grey
Titanium White

As a young man, my imagination was sparked by the inventive paintings of Salvador Dalí. An appreciation of the old masters followed, with Turner and Monet topping the list. Singer Sargent, Toulouse-Lautrec, Joaquín Sorolla and Andy Warhol serve as more modern influences.

I am also excited by many contemporary artists out there. Carol Marine and her book ‘Daily Painting’ has been a great help, Tim Horn is fantastic at pretty much everything, Teddi Parker does amazing things with house paint and Stephen Wysocki produces seemingly effortless studies on the effects of light out in Wisconsin. Other great books are ‘Fill Your Oil Paintings with Light and Color’ by Kevin Macpherson and ‘Landscape Painting’ by Mitchell Albala. I could watch the videos of Andrew Tischler all day.

I was introduced to oil painting by Andrew Schofield.
